  Latest Bowness & Windermere Reviews

Bowness and Windermere - although only a mile apart - each have a distinctly different feel about them. Bowness is busy in season, especially at the bottom end where the road meets the lake. There's a nice place called The Glebe down there where little ones can stretch their legs and I think there's a few other things like a park and pitch and putt. You can also do a nice walk to the lake shore from The Glebe. Moving back towards the centre, you have the ticket office for the Steamers and an information centre run by the Lake District National Park. This is right on the lake and can get really busy... With swans as well as people! Further into Bowness still, you have lots of shops, pubs, the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, Windermere Steamboat Museum and various places to eat.

Carry on up the road and you'll reach Windermere which has a slightly different feel to it. Much smaller and usually a fraction less busy. More emphasis on shops and cafés and not quite the same proximity to Lake Windermere but you can take a gentle stroll to the lake from here.

As per the previous review, I would try to visit out of the main season if you possibly can. Times such as the Bank Holiday weekends are not the best time to explore due to the volume of tourists the places attract. Definitely worth a visit, though.

Windermere is a beautiful lake and some of the town is really lovely as we well, but I'm afraid I found the number of tourists crowding the roads and pavements a bit too much to handle. They come because of the reputation of the place and they aren't wrong to do so. There are unlimited options for dining (but if you are there during peak tourist season, you may want to book ahead depending on the restaurant) and lots of quaint little shops offering lake-based memorabilia. It is exactly as you would expect. My family and I enjoy the outdoors, so we were able to venture out and do things without what felt like half the population of England surrounding us. We will return, but during a more quiet time of year. Beautiful and quaint and lovely - but far too crowded! - JJC
